Pastor Robert Lee Simmons, age 73, departed this life on Thursday, June 10, 2021, at his home in Sumter, South Carolina.
Pastor Simmons was born on June 25, 1947 in Pauline, SC. He was the son of the late David and Charlotte Ruth Martin-Simmons.
Pastor Simmons was known for being an active member in the community. He served in the United States Army, fighting for our country in the Vietnam War in the 1960s. In addition to this, he was an active member of the Sumter Combat Veterans Group. He also worked as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service for over 27 years, and worked as a manager at JCPenney’s in Sumter, in which he was the first African American to pursue this position. Pastor Simmons was known for his accomplishments in the pulpit and the community, but his charming smile, gentle spirit, and genuine care for others is what he will be most prominently remembered for.
He was preceded in death by his life partner, Shirley Ann Blanks Simmons; his daughter Elesha A. Simmons; his siblings David Simmons Jr., Bertie Mae Simmons, Mary Ruth Rosier, Brenda Green, and Larry Simmons.
Pastor and Mother Simmons were blessed with five children and eight grandchildren. They are Minister Marcus Simmons (Cassandra Hickson-Simmons) of Florence, SC, Jocelyn Simmons of Sumter, SC, the late Elesha Simmons, Madonna Simmons-Cotten (Lunceford Cotten IV) of Sumter, SC, David Simmons of Sumter, SC, and Brandy Simmons of Sumter, SC; his grandchildren, Ashton Simmons, Aaron Simmons, David Alan Simmons, Shaniya Simmons, Elesha Simmons, Israel Simmons, Lauryn and Madisyn Simmons; his siblings, Betty and Frank Asmond of Columbia, SC, Elwillie Simmons of Columbia, SC, Lois and Peter Asmond of Columbia, SC, Charlene Simmons of Columbia, SC, Pastor Henry and Renee Simmons of Columbia, SC, Minister Nathaniel and O’Cynthia Simmons of Latta, SC, John Simmons of Columbia, SC, Melvin and Winifred Simmons of Columbia, SC, Bernard and Jaqueline Simmons of Columbia, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
