On February 4, 1954 in Catawba, North Carolina, the late Robert and Mary Hull Guest gave added to their family with the birth of a son, which they named Rickey.
This tenacious young man was educated in the Statesville School System, graduating from MorningSide High. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country well from 1974 to 1977. He also attended Mitchell Business College and Catawba Valley CommunityCollege in Hickory, NC, receiving certification in AC/Heating Refrigeration Technology.
Rickey was brought up in a very strong, religious household where God was loved and feared. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers Matthew and Noah.
He relocated to Winston-Salem, NC and was employed with Thomasville Furniture Company for several years. It was there that he met and married the former Charlene Conrad.
If you knew Rickey, you met fun and loving individuals. He was very witty and could be outspoken to say the least. He was known as the “Cool Uncle” to his nieces and nephews. In addition to enjoying fishing, he also enjoyed cooking and playing dominoes.
His childhood friend, Dr. Clayton A. Scott, recalls how when they were young Rickey made an adventure of their activities. He recalls them picking blackberries and selling to neighbors, taking their proceeds and purchasing oatmeal cookies and chocolate milk. Rickey was quite an extraordinary story teller. He enjoyed his own humor and did not mind laughing at himself and others.
Life has its share of twists and turns. Rickey transitioned from this life here on January 13, 2021 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Edgar Allen Guest.
Rickey leaves to cherish a loving and devoted wife, Charlene C. Guest. Sons, Derrick Lamont Gray, of Newton, NC, Ervin Louis Gray, of Statesville, NC and Kinte Conrad. Daughter, Jennifer Wynette Gray, of Statesville, NC. Grandchildren, D’Zyer Brown and Zaire Campbell, Erykah Green and Kenya Conrad. Great grandchildren, Uh’morah Brown and Leilani Easter.
